Several New Jersey county prescription drug abuse task forces and focus groups have recognized the need for efficient, secure, and environmentally sound methods to collect and dispose of unused/unwanted and expired medicine. The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, and the Drug Enforcement Administration New Jersey Division have joined together in an effort to educate New Jersey about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and the easy accessibility of these drugs with "Operation Medicine Cabinet."
With more than 70% of prescription pain killer abuse coming from those who got them from family or friends without their knowledge or consent, "Operation Medicine Cabinet" will afford New Jersey residents the opportunity to rid their medicine cabinets of their unused/unwanted and expired medicine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 14.
The goal of the program is to allow citizens to deliver their unused/unwanted or expired medication to law enforcement officials who can in turn dispose of these controlled substances in a safe, non-hazardous manner, preventing these pills from falling into the wrong hands.
Mercer County residents can bring their expired or unused medicine to the Mercer County Administration Building located on 640 S. Broad St. in Trenton. Parking is available in front of the building.
